The Widow White and her daughter, Nell, come to Oregon Country to invest their savings. They become victims of Nathaniel Blackside and his sidekick, Stalder Slough, a shady character. Blackside sells them a gold mine (which is somewhat short on gold). Others in the town include Captain Jack, a steamboat operator, Mrs. Norman Van Wealth, an affluent matron, Rock Creke, the sheriff, Minnie Moore, a fallen lady, and Clara Clene, President of the Anti-litter Ladies League.
